Note: Numbers, like the one on the wooden trail marker above, are found at 27 points along the main trail (minus a few which need replacement). Just follow these markers and a point of interest may be seen at each (some seasonally).

Geology

Trail marker #1 is appropriately located near the Main Trail Entry.  Precambrian metamorphic mica schist and gneiss are what you will be walking on. These very old sediments were turned into rocks when heated by rising basalt magma, .  In lakes and streams, flakes of mica are known as "fools gold".
